Los Angeles-The return of the Evaporators is always something I look forward to with the greatest of anticipation. This year was no different. As true Americans know, the events of 2003 have turned us into virtual saviors in the eyes of the world on account of the Coalition Forcesí success in freeing the Iraqi people from the tyrannical dictatorship of Saddam Hussein.
Canadians, with their new Prime Minister Paul Martin, are about as grateful as they come. And so I imagined freedom loving rockers, The Evaporators, would sashay into Southern California singing the praises of our peace making nation with a special Canadian tribute to America the beautiful. I was not disappointed.
As I suspected Nardwuar took the stage adorned in an "Old Glory" T-shirt (artfully intertwined with a Maple Leaf) and The Evaporators launched into a laudation of the good old U.S of A with their song United Empire Loyalists. They followed with a delicious little homage to fromage called Addicted to Cheese. Finally they exalted our Great pResident with the good-natured ribbing of Cardboard Brains. Itís safe to say the Evaporators thrilled US All with their infectious Ripple Rock and Roll! Iím Your Buddy indeed!
The next day, bonhomie DJ Senor Amor, avant-garde artist Sara Vidar and yours truly had the pleasure of accompanying the boys on a tour though The City of the Angels. We started with our traditional "breakfast of champions" at Roscoeís Chicken and Waffles. We take The Evaporators there every year because everyone knows Canadians love soul food. How Ďbout some more grits Nard?
Next on the agenda? Shopping! Jet Rag was having a sale and Nardwuar picked out a groovy shiny cowboy shirt. I donít think he bought it. So, as the saying goes, "done, done, on to the next one! " Wacko (tm) held a special surprise. Along side the unique gift ideas, one of a kind Nardwuar the Human Serviette found his double! And Iím not talkiní Barney Rubble!
It couldnít have been a more perfect time. I love these guys so much I canít decide if I should name my new puppy (a Newfoundland of course) Scott, John, Dave, or Nardwuar. I guess Iíll just have to wait a couple of months to see which of their dynamic personalities resonates in him most. Keep on rockiní in the free world Evaporators!
Hey did I mention that (Iíve got) Ice Wine in My Wine Cooler? Oh Canada!

NEA Balks At Funding Vidar
The Washington Post
Washington, D.C.; Aug. 6, 2002
Not so long ago, artist Sara Vidar filled a jar with urine, plunged a troll
into it, and helped start the war against the National Endowment for the
Arts. Yesterday the agency didnít give her a second chance.
The National Council on the Arts, the advisory arm of the NEA, turned down
Vidarís application for a fellowship with a resounding 16 to 4 vote. Ever
since the Piss Troll series in 1999Ėa collection of troll dolls submerged
in urineĖthe artistís name has been a rallying cry for opponents of the NEA.
Vidarís new application for federal funds, which included voodoo-inspired
doll face wall hangings, caused a spirited debate over the quality of her
work, though her name was never mentioned aloud. "Surely there is something
better than this out there," said Philomena Meinhof, a veteran council
member and voice teacher.
A new council member, Lanny McHanny, a gallery director and gay rights
activist in New York, offered another view: "I can see clearly why many
people would be disturbed by it and would have difficulty understanding why
this is art. But it is art, it is actually good art. ... It meets my
criteria." McHanny co-wrote a report on the arts for the Clinton
Vidar, reached at home in Los Angeles, said the decision saddened her. "I
feel I have been unofficially blackballed. I think it is too bad the NEA
needs a scapegoat," she said. Asked about possible legal action, she said,
"I will only say at this time that I have contacted the legal offices of
Larry Parker, because he will fight for me."

"Piss Jesus" has a new rival tho' archival. Is Micturition sedition or purgative contrition?
